From jayski:  After a five-year absence from competing in a NASCAR race, Ward Burton will drive at Daytona in February in the NextEra Energy 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event. Burton and his 19-year-old son, Jeb, have teamed with Hillman Racing in the Truck Series to run the #27 Chevy this season. Burton, the 2002 Daytona 500 winner and brother of current Richard Childress Racing team member Jeff Burton, stepped away from the sport in 2007 to help Jeb's racing career as well as work with the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation. Burton had five career wins in in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series and four in the Nationwide Series. Jeb moves up from the NASCAR Whelen All-American series to the Truck Series. Ward will race at Daytona because Jeb is not yet qualified to run at Daytona. Burton also will make select starts throughout the truck series schedule. The younger Burton will make his debut behind the wheel in the Kroger 250 at Martinsville on March 31. Atop the pit box for the #27 will be Richmond native Trip Bruce, who worked with Burton in his Sprint Cup days at Bill Davis Racing.

Veteran NASCAR crew chief Richie Wauters takes the leap into NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team ownership forming Wauters Motorsports which in 2012 will be driven by Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Paulie Harraka. Wauters' career began at tracks around his hometown Green Bay, Wis. and quickly moved into the NASCAR Touring Series. Wauters crewed successful NASCAR Sprint Cup teams with drivers Kenny Wallace, Elliott Sadler, Robert Pressley and Jeff Green. Wauters, in his tenure as a crew chief in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, led teams to 18 victories from 2004-2010 with drivers Shane Hmiel, Kyle Busch and Aric Almirola. Former NASCAR Drive for Diversity driver Harraka will take the wheel of the Ford F150 Camping World truck. Most recently, Harraka posted three victories in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. Harraka, a senior at Duke University, has also scored the Championship in NASCAR's Whelen All-American Series, and posted two different NASCAR Rookie of the Year titles: NASCAR Whelen All American Series and NASCAR Camping World Series West (Now K&N Pro Series West). The Wauters Motorsports F150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series truck will be utilizing Doug Yates and Roush Racing Engines in their debut at Daytona International Speedway for the running of the NEXTERA Energy Resources 250, Friday, Feb. 24th.

After only running a handful of events in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2011, Sam Hornish, Jr. will run the entire schedule in 2012 thanks to increased support from Alliance Truck Parts and a new partnership with Wurth Group. Alliance Truck Parts will increase its primary sponsorship role on the #12 Penske Racing Dodge Challenger from six to 26 events in 2012. Wurth Group, a German-based automotive and industrial supply company, will be the primary sponsor of the car in seven events and an associate sponsor in the other 26.

Richard Petty Motorsports announced today the formation of a new NASCAR Nationwide Series team with driver Michael Annett and his long-time partner Pilot Flying J. The team will be run out of RPM's Concord, N.C. race shop and will vie for the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship. Annett, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, comes to Richard Petty Motorsports after spending last season at Rusty Wallace, Inc. He has posted 13 top-10 finishes in 105 Nationwide Series starts and drove to a ninth-place finish in the championship points standings last season. Pilot Flying J, the driver driven company, is headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, and has more than 550 retail locations across North America. Dr. Joseph Mattioli, Pocono Raceway Founder and Chairman of the Board, passed away today at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy illness. He was 86. "Doc" as he was known to friends and associates, was one of the most respected and admired men in automobile racing. He founded Pocono Raceway in the early 1960's and has been at the helm of Pocono ever since. Under his leadership, the track grew in stature and has hosted 68 very successful NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Events. His passion and drive helped Pocono Raceway succeed when other tracks fell by the wayside. Pocono Raceway is the only remaining family owned and run track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. He was always concerned that race fans and race car drivers and their families were treated with the upmost respect and constantly upgraded procedures and Raceway facilities to meet that goal.
He kept his fingers on the pulse of stock car racing and read everything printed concerning the sport. He was in the office daily, until last fall, and oversaw all aspects of the Pocono Raceway operations. At age 83, Dr. Mattioli spearheaded an ambitious solar energy project. He built a three megawatt photovoltaic solar energy system on 25 acres at Pocono Raceway. It is the world's largest solar-powered sports facility, making Pocono Raceway a leader in the renewable energy and environmental fields.
Dr. Mattioli was also well respected in the community...
He served in the Pacific during World War Two as a Navy medic. Using the G.I. bill, he enrolled in the dentistry program at Temple University (where he met his soon to be wife, Rose.) Upon graduation, he developed his dental practice into a very lucrative business by working 12 to 14 hour days, six and sometimes seven days a week. He then began investing in and developing properties in Philadelphia and Northeastern Pennsylvania where he became involved in the start up of Pocono Raceway.
Dr. Mattioli is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dr. Rose, daughters Louie and Michele and son Joseph Mattioli III, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His passing leaves a void in the NASCAR community and especially to his family and extended "Pocono Raceway" family.

Miller Lite has renewed its partnership with Penske Racing. Miller Lite will continue as the season-long primary sponsor of Penske's #2 Dodge driven by Brad Keselowski, building upon an alliance that began in 1991. For Miller Lite, its sponsorship extension with Penske and Keselowski comes after an amazing 2011 season, Keselowski's second full year on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. Keselowski and his Miller Lite team surged from deep in the driver standings as late as mid-July to win three races, qualify for the Chase and finish fifth in the championship standings...Brad Keselowski's extension with Penske Racing is for two years, with an organization option for a third year in 2015, team sources confirmed Thursday. Keselowski was entering the last year of his initial three-year deal with Penske. The team had announced Dec. 1 that an extension was signed, but no terms were disclosed. Crew chief Paul Wolfe and sponsor Miller Lite also have re-signed through 2015.

Scott Speed will drive a partial Sprint Cup Series schedule for Leavine Family Racing this season, focusing mostly on the 1.5-mile tracks and road courses. Team owner Bob Leavine was impressed with Speed's ability to out-qualify his car last season with inferior equipment and decided to give the ex-Formula One racer a shot. The team plans to avoid start-and-parking if possible and run the full races it enters, beginning with the Texas Motor Speedway race in April. "You can make more money doing (start-and-parks), for sure, but that's not what Bob wants to do," Speed said Tuesday night. "We want to be professional about it. We're going to look good, we're going to have all of our stuff right and represent our brand and what we're doing the right way and not just be another start-and-park team." Leavine gets its engines from Roush Fenway Racing (on a lower tier) and buys used Roush cars to field its #95 entry (which David Starr drove last season)...The team won't run the superspeedway races, because that requires buying a special car and hoping it survives a crapshoot race. But it will purchase a car for the road courses, Speed said, because those events are "probably more in our control."..."There are a lot of great drivers who don't have a ride," said Speed. "It's a tough time in our sport and I am lucky to have the opportunity here at Levine Family Racing because it's one of the good ones out there. We are doing 16 races and we are going to do them right including the two road course races. We are going to go out and race when we have the ability to run and run it right."(CMS Media Tour Notes)(1-26-2012)

Walmart announced Thursday that they will expand their merchandise program in 2012, the 50th anniversary of the retail giant. While the merchandise partnership isn't new, Walmart will take to the track for the first time with a Chevy built by Turner Motorsports and driven by Bill Elliott. However the effort, as of now, is for only one race; the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona in July. The company wanted to get on the track this year with the #50 Chevy and Elliott to help celebrate the 50th birthday of the company in July and just wants to 'have a lot of fun with it', said Rand Waddoups, senior director Entertainment Properties and Brands for Walmart. The company has no shop has hired no personnel and has no plans beyond the single race. 'But we have six months yet', Waddoups added.

Caterpillar will be the primary sponsor on Jeff Burton's #31 Chevy for 21 of the 36 Sprint Cup races in 2012. Caterpillar also will sponsor the 31 car in three non-points events the Budweiser Shootout and Gatorade Duels at Daytona and the Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte. In all other races, Caterpillar will still have a major presence on the car...Not on the schedule is the Brickyard 400, which Caterpillar has often relinquished to other primary sponsors in the past. Towles said that race is a tough sell to Caterpillar's dealers and customers because hospitality is costly...With the departure of Clint Bowyer from Richard Childress Racing, General Mills' Wheaties brand also will be a primary sponsor for Burton this year. And on Tuesday, it was announced that BB&T, another one of Bowyer's former sponsors, will be the primary for five of Burton's races in 2012.

NASCAR will no longer fine its teams and drivers without making the fines public, the governing body announced Wednesday. NASCAR was criticized harshly last season after fining Brad Keselowski $25,000 for publicly criticizing NASCAR's switch to fuel injection and never making the fine public. The existence of the fine was uncovered by a media outlet and later confirmed by the Penske Racing driver. Other drivers have said they were fined in secret. Denny Hamlin was fined in 2010 for suggesting on Twitter that NASCAR issues phantom caution flags during races. Ryan Newman was fined that same season for critical comments about the racing at Talladega Superspeedway after a major wreck.

By Jason Christley, NASCAR:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR and Rev Racing announced today the six drivers that will compete for Rev Racing in the 2012 season. The announcement was made during the preseason NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway stop at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, where the drivers were introduced.

Rev Racing, formerly known as Revolution Racing, operates under the ownership of Max Siegel and will field four teams in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and two teams in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series...

The team is coming off the most successful season in the history of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity, which is entering its ninth season as NASCAR’s leading on-track initiative. Rev Racing collected six wins in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and had three drivers finish in the top 10 in series points last year.

The drivers (Twitter handle in parentheses) who will compete for Rev Racing in 2012 include:

Jorge Arteaga (@JorgeArteaga46) – Arteaga, 25, from Aguascalientes, Mexico, will run his first full season in NASCAR K&N Pro Series. He competed in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models for Rev Racing last season, and also drove in the NASCAR Mexico Series, where he was voted Most Popular Driver by the fans.

Mackena Bell (@MackenaBell) – Bell, 21, from Carson City, Nev., will be in her third year with Rev Racing having competed in both the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and NASCAR K&N Pro Series. This will be her second full-time season in Late Models.

Trey Gibson (@TGibsonRacing) – The 19-year-old from Easley, S.C., will enter his second season driving a Late Model with the team after finishing seventh in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series South Carolina standings last year.

Ryan Gifford (@RyanGifford2) – The 22-year-old driver from Winchester, Tenn., will return to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East for his third full-time season in the series. He became the first African-American in series history to win a pole award in 2010 and has finished in the top 10 in the standings in each of his two seasons with Rev Racing.

Kyle Larson (@KyleLarsonRacin) – The 19-year-old open-wheel standout from Elk Grove, Calif., will move into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series ranks after he became the first driver to win a World of Outlaws race and score victories in all three USAC divisions in the same season last year.

Bryan Ortiz (@BryanORacing) – The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native will move up to NASCAR K&N Pro Series from Late Models in his second season with Rev Racing. The 22-year-old has a strong road-racing background and will also compete in select events in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

From SPEED:  Despite having less than 45 minutes of track time with its brand-new Daytona Prototype, Ryan Dalziel surprised the GRAND-AM field by putting his Starworks Motorsport machine on the overall pole for the 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Dalziel turned a best time of 1:41.119 in his third-generation Riley-Ford, edging out morning pace-setter Max Angelelli by 0.121 seconds. It was the rapid Scot's first career Rolex Sports Car Series pole position.

The shock pole for the Peter Baron-led team came following an engine failure in opening practice, which sidelined the car for the entire 90-minute session. Dalziel turned the Riley's first-ever laps in Thursday's afternoon session, recording the seventh quickest time.

"The car was really good and I felt pretty confident coming out of it," Dalziel said of his first experience in the car, just two hours before his pole run. "I was a little bit surprised as I thought the Chevys were going to be the cars to beat. But we put together a really good lap...

Dalziel edged out the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette DP of Max Angelelli by 0.121 seconds in the heated 15-minute session, which saw the top-seven separated by less than one-second.

For Angelelli, who will share his Dallara-chassied machine with Ricky Taylor and IndyCar star Ryan Briscoe, starting second came as more of a disappointment after the Italian's quick pace in morning practice.

"I cannot hide my disappointment, obviously, leading free practice through this and I'm P2," Angelelli said. "I was not expecting P2 in the end. But I still feel our car is really good and really fast. I still feel that we'll be the car to beat for the 24-hour."

...Another Corvette DP, the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona example driven by Antonio Garcia, was fifth quickest in the session but will be moved to the rear of the field due to a ride height infringement.

The other big story in DP came from the sister No. 01 Ganassi entry, which did not set a time after undergoing an engine change from the previous practice session. As a result, defending winners Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Joey Hand and Graham Rahal will also start from the back of the pack.

Brumos Racing will lead the GT field to the green, following an action-packed qualifying session to determine the grid for the massive 45-car starting field. Andrew Davis wound up on top, thanks to the defending Rolex Series champion's 1:49.342 in his famed No. 59 Porsche.

"That was an intense session," Davis said. "I just pushed as hard as I could from the first lap out. We struggled the first couple of sessions, so this is very unexpected. But it shows, the same thing as last year, with Brumos Racing, that they never stop fighting."

Davis held on to the pole for he and co-drivers Leh Keen, Marc Lieb and Rolex 24 legend Hurley Haywood, despite a late charge by 2010 series champion Jeff Segal in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari F458 Italia Grand Am.

Segal laid down a 1:49.357 on his final lap, which was just 0.015 seconds slower than Davis' pole time.

Andy Lally put his No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche in third, with Porsche factory star Patrick Long fourth in his Flying Lizard Motorsports GT3 Cup car.

...The top-15 cars, one-third of the GT field, were separated by less than one-second in qualifying, showing the depth and competitiveness in the production-based ranks.

A two-hour night practice will wrap up Rolex Series activities tonight, with two further practice sessions on tap for Friday.

While his Formula One hopes for this year may have faded, Nick Heidfeld is poised to make a switch to sports car racing.

Team sources have indicated to SPEED.com that the 34-year-old has signed with Rebellion Racing for a partial season of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Heidfeld will pilot one of the Anglo-Swiss squad’s Lola B12/60 Toyotas at the Twelve Hours of Sebring, Six Hours of Spa and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Last week, the team confirmed its WEC participation with drivers Neel Jani, Nicolas Prost, Andrea Belicchi and Harold Primat for the eight-round global championship, with two final drivers to be announced.

Having spent the last 12 years in F1 with a variety of teams, including Prost, Sauber and Williams, Heidfeld was replaced by Bruno Senna mid-season at Renault, putting the German on the sidelines and questions looming over his 2012 plans.

While rumors had him taking up a new career in DTM, potentially with
BMW, the Bavarian manufacturer completed its six-driver lineup earlier this month, leaving the Heidfeld without a seat in the new-look touring car championship.

An official announcement of Heidfeld’s signing is expected to come on Feb. 2, when the Rebellion's WEC entries will be likely confirmed by the ACO.
